Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
Description:
SNAP, a program of the US Department of Agriculture, is provided to insure that the nutritional needs of income eligible persons are met.
Eligibility Criteria:
Meet program requirements and income/resource guidelines. Persons may qualify for SNAP if they:
- Work and receive low wages
- Have little or no income
- Are elderly or disabled
- Receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Public Assistance (PA)
Referral Procedure:
File an application with the Department of Social Services.

Q. Does the client have to apply for SNAP in person?
A. No. Applications may be filed by mail or another person can be authorized to act as "Authorized Representative."
Q. How long will it take to receive SNAP benefits?
A. It may take up to 30 days from the date the application is filed.
Q. Are there any provisions for emergencies?
A. Yes, an applicant may receive Expedited benefits within 5 calendar days if sh/she is SNAP eligible and:
- The household has less than $100 in cash and other available resources and has or will have less than $150 in gross income during the application month
- Income and available resources are less than rent or mortgage, plus heat, utilities, and phone
- Homeless
- Migrant or seasonal farm worker
