Overview
The Herkimer County Clerk's Office is responsible for filing and recording official documents, the Department of Motor Vehicles with offices in Herkimer and Old Forge, and Records Management including providing services for public research. Clerk’s Office Alerts:
**In response to the increase of deed related fraud nationwide and the practice of “harvesting signatures”, the Herkimer County Clerk has adjusted access to online records in an effort to better protect the security of the signatures of those in Herkimer County. Starting March 1, 2025, searching and viewing indexing information will continue to be free of charge. However, access to the images of our records will require payment.

Free Fraud Alert Service: Get e-mail alerts when a document is recorded in your name at the County Clerk’s Office. Here’s how to sign up:
- Go to https://searchiqs.com/fraudalert?CC=NYHER, and enter your e-mail and names to be alerted on (up to 3)
- Check your e-mail and click a link confirming your sign-up
- You will then receive e-mail alerts for any documents that are recorded in the future
Criminal Searches The Court Clerk maintains the records for all Felony Criminal Court cases in Herkimer County. Due to the confidential information contained in these cases, these files are not searchable through the public record website. Unless sealed, criminal files can be accessed on a computer terminal in the County Clerk’s office.
A search of criminal files may be requested by submitting the name and time frame the records need to be searched for. It may take up to 24 hours for the request to be processed. There is a $5 fee for each 2 year time frame searched. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope so the results can be returned.

Hours of Operation:
Memorial Day to Labor Day (summer hours):
Monday–Friday, 8:00am to 3:45pm
Labor Day to Memorial Day (winter hours):
Monday–Friday, 8:00am to 4:15pm
DMV: Monday–Friday, 8:00am to 4:15pm
Passports will only be issued from 9:00am to 1:00pm and 2:00pm to 3:00pm
The Old Forge DMV office will be open on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10:00am to 1:45pm with the exception of holidays
EDL and REAL IDs will only be issued from 8:30am to 3:00pm and CDLs will only be issued from 8:00am to 2:00pm due to the time allowed for testing
No permit test will be given after 3:00pm
The Herkimer Department of Motor Vehicles along with the Old Forge Department of Motor Vehicles will not be accepting online at home permit tests. All permit tests will need to be taken in person. Thank you for your understanding.
